Autonomous shuttle for personnel – airside

Test runs without passengers will take place from mid-March. The first runs with passengers are planned for mid-April.

Naming autonomous buses helps build trust and makes the technology feel more human and approachable. It helps reduce fear and supports acceptance. An individual name also ensures recognition and clear distinction.

Yes, the shuttle bus is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is monitored by a safety driver to ensure passenger safety. It has numerous sensors that monitor the surroundings in real time and stop the bus immediately in the event of danger. All passengers on board are also forced to sit and fasten their seat belts. The shuttle bus itself has emergency buttons with which the bus can be stopped immediately if necessary.

The shuttle bus is available to all employees with a ramp permit at Zurich Airport. They can board at the designated bus stops.

The regular employee shuttle bus will continue to operate at the usual times. This means that employees will not suffer any disadvantages if the shuttle bus malfunctions.

The pilot project is scheduled for 12 to 24 months, depending on its success.

The findings gathered will be used to assess the potential of further autonomous vehicles at the airport. If the project is successful, the continuation of autonomous shuttle bus operation cannot be ruled out.

The shuttle bus is part of Zurich Airport’s vision of introducing innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. The shuttle bus is an ideal first test case for this, as it does not have to cross taxiways, does not have to drive on stands, follows a fixed route, can be used by as many people as possible to gain experience and still represents added value for the company.
