How is air quality determined?
Calculations, computer models and on-site measurements show a picture of the situation at the airport.
Since 1991, the level of emissions of air pollutants from all airport-related sources has been calculated annually, and for several different pollutants. For technical reasons, it is not possible to take measurements directly at the source. Calculations by specialised computer programmes produce very precise figures relating to the pollutant situation. To this end, countless parameters are collected throughout the year which are then fed into the model.
How good is the air?
The many years of measurements at the airport show that the direct emissions from the airport and flight operations have a modest impact on the air pollution levels in the region. While the limits on the apron and along the major traffic axes in the region are exceeded at points, exposure to pollutants from the airport falls rapidly as the distance increases. Outside of the airport perimeter, pollutants from the airport make up a maximum of 10% of the total air pollution measured there. This shows that the air pollution is no higher than in other urban regions of Switzerland.

Measures to reduce pollutants
To further improve air quality, a wide variety of measures are being implemented by all partners at the airport. They aim to avoid and reduce emissions from flight operations, handling, infrastructure and landside transport.
- Emission charges for aircraft
- Fixed ground power systems for aircraft
- Modern heating plants
Measures to promote public transportZurich Airport is recognised globally as a leader when it comes to air pollutants at airports, in terms of both understanding the processes and taking effective measures.
