Additional Bus Gates
Switzerland's accession to the Schengen Area at the end of March 2009 and associated Schengen/non-Schengen zoning requirements within the airport necessitated the provision of additional gates. The Bus Gate South facility, which opened in late October 2008, now offers ten additional gates for passenger handling.
The two-storey Bus Gate South building is reached via a walkway from Terminal 2. The upper level houses the passenger security check points and plantrooms. The necessary passenger handling facilities together with amenities such as a restaurant, tax and duty-free shops and the smoking lounge are located on the ground floor. In terms of materiality, the building design features plain, high-quality industrial materials.
The Bus Gate’s architecture is notable for its translucent glass facades (Profilit channel glass and clear glass), structural steelwork, aluminium cladding, dark granite floor tiles and metal-grate ceiling.
