At home – The right way to pack
Check in advance what should go in your checked baggage and what should go in your hand baggage. For safety reasons, certain items are not permitted on flights at all.
- Rechargeable batteries, standard batteries and power banks must be packed in your hand baggage. A maximum of 20 spare batteries with up to 100 watt hours (wh) each may be carried. Batteries with a rating of over 160 watt-hours are not permitted in any baggage.
- Liquids are only permitted in hand baggage in containers of max. 100 ml. Pack these into a resealable 1-litre plastic bag while at home. You may also take larger quantities of liquid medication, baby food and special foods that you require for the journey in your hand baggage. All other liquids must be transported in your checked baggage.
- Knives and scissors with blades over 6 cm in length are only permitted in checked baggage.
- Lighters and matches are not permitted in either hand baggage or checked baggage. You may carry one lighter or box of matches on your person.
- Fuel pastes, sparklers, fireworks, paints, acids,toxic and corrosive substances, gas cartridges etc. are not permitted in luggage at all.
- Tools (e.g. screwdrivers) with a blade length of over 6 cm are only permitted in checked baggage.
- Please do not use padlocks to secure your baggage. It is best to use TSA-certified locks for registered baggage.

Preparation for christmas holidays travel
Batteries, rechargeable batteries and power banks are only permitted in hand baggage.
- Up to 100 Wh: A maximum of 20 spare batteries with up to 100 Wh (Wh = watt hours) each may be carried. These must be protected against short circuits and both terminals must be taped.
- 100 to 160 Wh: A maximum of 2 batteries are permitted. Authorisation from the airline is required.
- Over 160 Wh: Batteries, rechargeable batteries and power banks over 160 Wh are generally prohibited.
The power of lithium-ion batteries is specified in watt hours (Wh). For lithium metal batteries, the lithium content (LC) is stated.
Conversion aid for battery power:
- Watt hours (Wh) = ampere-hours (Ah) x voltage (V) or
- Watt hours (Wh) = milliampere-hours (mAh) x voltage (V) / 1000
At the Airport – Get ready for security Check
Dispose of liquids in containers of more than 100 ml in the bins provided (exceptions: liquid medication, baby food and special foods that you require for the journey). Liquid duty-free items of over 100 ml with a purchase receipt in a sealed bag in accordance with the ICAO standard are permitted. Permitted liquids will be subjected to an additional inspection. They may only be taken on board the flight if they have been approved by the security staff.
Please follow instructions from staff during the security check. The following items must be placed separately in the baggage trays:
- Metallic items such as coins, keys and belts (if they are not stowed in your hand baggage)
- Jackets, coats, sports jackets and blazers (if they are not stowed in your hand baggage)
- Electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, cameras and mobile phones
- The 1-litre plastic bag containing your liquids (individual containers of up to max. 100 ml, incl. hand sanitizer gel)
- Liquid medication, baby food and special foods of over 100 ml
- Liquid duty free items of over 100 ml with purchase receipt in a sealed bag in accordance with the ICAO standard
Health-related information
For pregnant women
The metal detector at the security check is not hazardous to pregnant women or their unborn babies. The regulations regarding pregnancy differ from airline to airline. Please ask your airline how late into your pregnancy you are allowed to fly and whether you require a doctor's certificate.
