Zurich Airport to launch its own Formula 1 racetrack
The e-sports and racing simulator start-up Racing Unleashed has teamed up with Zurich Airport to present its first self-designed virtual race track - the ‘Zurich Airport Circuit’. Zurich Airport will probably be the only airport in the world with its own virtual race track.
The e-sports start-up Racing Unleashed stands for a world-class virtual racing experience. In February 2022, Racing Unleashed will open a racing lounge with ten simulators on an area of over 400m2 in the Circle at Zurich Airport. Until then, the Racing Unleashed pop-up lounge, near the Circle main square, is already the meeting place for all racing enthusiasts - with currently six racing simulators. Real high-end racing simulator cockpits are used to drive on virtual traditional racetracks. Now Zurich Airport is getting its own race track, the ‘Zurich Airport Circuit’ - probably the first airport in the world to do so.
Zurich Airport Circuit
The aim of the first race track designed by Racing Unleashed itself is to make the virtual as real as possible. At 7.6 kilometres, the length of the Zurich Airport Circuit is longer than the average of current Formula race tracks - not least because the track is based on the realities of Zurich Airport and is challenging to drive. The start/finish of the ‘Zurich Airport Circuit’ is at the Circle. The ‘Zurich Airport Circuit’ leads over top-speed straights and a total of 22 changes of direction per lap, including S-curves, chicanes and a hairpin bend, through a large part of the airport site. The names of the curves are borrowed from Zurich Airport and motor racing: Cargo curve, GAC chicane (General Aviation Centre), BP turn, Swiss-S or Rega curve. Thanks to these curves, which require technically precise driving, the 7.6 km long airport racetrack is not a pure full-throttle circuit - regardless of the straights such as RUnway (RU Racing Unleashed) and Dock E.
